About Us

Mission

The World Watershed Alliance, a 501(c)3 non profit, is a scientific and educational collaborative dedicated to wise management of natural resources and the sustainable development of watershed ecosystems. WWA is composed of professional ecologists, planners, geologists, engineers, and architects with scientific expertise and solid experience building community partnerships. We focus on community-based natural resource management and maximizing adaptive capacity in facilitating environmental land-use decisions and developing ecological designs.

Vision

Watershed: the area of land, a bounded hydrologic system, within which all living things are inextricably linked by their common water course and where, as humans settled, simple logic demanded that they become part of a community
- John Wesley Powell

WWA is guided by the principle that sustainable resource manangement is the key to a healthy environment and strong healthy communities. Successful projects incorporate:
• Focused campaigns informed by the link between ecological health and public health;
• Innovative place-appropriate solutions and technologies;
• Strong community partnerships and, capacity-building strategies

Approach

The WWA empowers communities to secure watershed ecosystem services by:
• Fostering participatory watershed management;
• Collaborating with local communities to develop projects that advance human well being and environmental integrity through ecosystem management that promotes ecological, economic and social resilience; and
• Educating local communities about the significance of watershed management and training community members to continue watershed monitoring in order to make future adjustments to management plans.
